USS McKee AS-41 Gus Calandrino 12 Aug 2003

Nearly sunk by trash

I think it was in 1989. We were anchored out in Cold Bay, AL which is a tiny town of a couple hundred people.

Anyway, we were there so long and generating so much garbage that we brought a huge barge alongside to accumulate our trash on and then when the barge would fill up they would tugboat the barge into port and empty it.

It got real rough on one stormy night and the barge began smacking the side of the McKee. Eventually the barge ripped a hole in the forward portion of the Mckee's hull and almost sank us. An entire berth was flooded and had to be sealed off. Luckily no one was hurt but it was pretty scarry for awhile.
