It was a dark and stormy night (Really!). The command was out to stay off the weather decks due to heavy seas. We were in the Pacific either on the way to Pearl or on the way back in 1971 to the best of my memory. I was assigned to the Radio shack and in charge of taking the burnbags to the incinerators between the stacks. We (me and 2-3 others) were doing pretty good despite the ship doing some serious rolls and pitching when one of the guys dropped a bag over the rail onto the main deck. I told the other guys to continue with the burn and I grabbed the guy who dropped the bag and we went down the ladder to the deck. We were picking up paper (the bag had broken open) when I looked up and saw a huge wave coming at us (seemed to be 20 feet at least); I yelled to the other guy to grab hold of something and I grabbed a nearby ladder. I know I was underwater for a few seconds and when I opened my eyes the water was still coming down the deck at knee level. The other guy had hold of a pipestand and was as wet and scared as I was. I told him "lets the the hell out of here" and up the ladder we went. Back in the com center we were soaked and asked by the LT to go back down and see if there was any more paper. I believe my comment was "you gotta be kidding" and I went to change clothes along with the other guy. We were that close to going overboard and ending our Navy carreer and life. I'm sorry I can't remember the other guys name and not even sure who the officer was at the time. But, this is no sh** !! |
