Ray Plumlee's an American Odyssey

Traveling Webmaster's Deck Log

This is a copy of my old Deck Log (Online Journal). I am now using an online blog at my "Have Web Sites Will Travel" web site. I use it to chronolog my travels around North America (my American Odyssey).

This "Old" Deck Log is now only an archive of past postings. It tell's the reader where I have visited and what adventures I have had up til the time I started my blog on Have Web Sites Will Travel. This archive was written primarily from the perspective of a tourist. Not necessarily my work log though I may do some of that too, especially in those early days when I built the sites resouces. Initially I used it to detail my efforts in getting prepared for the adventure. Then I chronicled the adventure itself.

Log Entry Title:     Update on the Traveling Webmasters Preperations

Log Entry:     Began watching Discovery's Travel channel a little more closely. Having fun watching shows like the "World's Best Roadside Attractions." Enjoyed seeing those fun places.

They reminded me of the "Roadside Attractions" I saw as a young lad growing up in southern California. On several occasions my family took family vacations where we traveled east on Route 66. As I remember Route 66 the highway is litterly covered with old style (50ish) motels, roadside museums. The roadside museum I remember the best is the one where they claimed to be the largest museum of rattle snakes. I also remember all the roadside shops that sold Indian artifacts and memorabilia of the old west. Wow! What fun it was.

Began searching the web for destinations I would like to visit. I started adding some into the "Recommend a Place to Visit" database so that I can have something in the various display pages. This is sort of like "seeding" so others will start adding in recommended places. I don't really expect a lot of participation at first. So I will build up the database for now. It also helps me with designing the various display pages if there is something in the database.

Also watched the "World's Best Truck Stops" on Discovery's travel channel. There are a few of them I want to visit too. The World's 8th best Truck Stop (as rated by Discovery's Travel Channel) is in Sparks Nevada. It is the Alamo Travel Center. It is the "World's number 8 best Truck Stop" because it has a casino in it. Plus it has a school to teach truckers gambling. Since this will be my first stop, in my my first Hub/Home Port of Reno, I will definitely make a point to stop by.

Actually, my real reason for stopping in Sparks, Nevada is my aunt Dorothy McCarthy lives there as does her daughter Leona (my cousin whom I haven't seen since the early sixties). Dorothy was married to my Uncle Frank McCarthy (now deceased) who was my grandmother, Beatrice "Bea" (McCarthy) Seay's brother.

Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Franks other daughter was Sharon. She is married to Rich Eberhart, a retired Navy Master Chief. I spent some time with them in Virginia when I was stationed there in 1987 and 1988. I have lost track of them since. Hopefully when I visit with Dorothy I can get Sharon and Rick's current address.

I look forward to seeing as many of my relatives as I can during this adventure and having my first stop get this priority accomplished, is great!

Decided to give my motorhome a name: "American Odyssey" In this way I can refer to "it" as more than an "it." It will help chronicle the travels because I will be spending a lot of time in the "American Odyssey."

I pretty much have the "Status Meter" done at the top of the web site pages. It now displays the mission day (74), first five stops in the schedule, with a link to the complete schedule. Upgraded the inport status to reflect actual locations if different than the hub/home port. Also gave myself the ability to display a temporary location if I am in transit between two hubs/home ports.
