Ray Plumlee's an American Odyssey

Traveling Webmaster's Deck Log

This is a copy of my old Deck Log (Online Journal). I am now using an online blog at my "Have Web Sites Will Travel" web site. I use it to chronolog my travels around North America (my American Odyssey).

This "Old" Deck Log is now only an archive of past postings. It tell's the reader where I have visited and what adventures I have had up til the time I started my blog on Have Web Sites Will Travel. This archive was written primarily from the perspective of a tourist. Not necessarily my work log though I may do some of that too, especially in those early days when I built the sites resouces. Initially I used it to detail my efforts in getting prepared for the adventure. Then I chronicled the adventure itself.

25 July 2005 McCall, Idaho Update so far and Plans for rest of Summer

The "Internet world" has found Ray Plumlee. My 9 years of self study and scratching to stay afloat as a web programmer has finally bore fruit. I am now getting more requests for work than I can comfortably do. And for the first time I have began accepting only projects that interest me. I of course will continue to provide web programming services for my existing clients, which number over 200, and only occassionally add a new client.

I provided the above information so you will understand that I have been very busy but that is what I want. I love web programming and spend most of my days either programming or in support of programming. I have planned taking several day trips by now and have only managed one. Yesterday, Sunday 24 July 2005 I went down to Cascade, Idaho to arrange for my next RV park stay. On the way there I went to the Tamarack Resort located near Donnelly, Idaho. It is the newest resort and, in my opionion, is a very well thought out project that will be a great success. Most of the community buildings are temporary tent like structures but very sturdy and functional. The lodge is still being constructed but I would gusess they will have it done for the winter 2005/2006 season.

One of the big selling points for the Tamarack Resort is they are selling lots for people to build their Winter/Summer homes or for that matter year around homes. There are already many homes built and many more under construction. All of these homes are very nice most of which are in the tradition of the log home (all be it big log homes). People who get in on the ground floor and get a home here will live in a winter wonderland and in the summer a beautful mountain region that does not get too hot in the summer.

I can just kick myself, but I forgot to take my cameras with me yesterday, so I will have to go back again to get a few pictures for the web site journal/blog.

13 August 2005 McCall, Idaho Last Update Prior to Departing For Cascade, Idaho

The last week or so we have had temperatures in the high 80's and low 90's. One (of many) great things about this area is that it may get a little hot in the afternoon and early evening, but by 9:00 PM or so it is already back into the 70's. For me the best time is in the mornings. A few days I have had to turn on the furnace for an hour so but by 8:00 AM it is absolutely beautiful and stays that way up to noon or later.

Starting yesterday the highs have been in the 70's which is my definition of perfect. The 10 day forecast has the temperature staying that way the whole period and beyond.

Sunday 31 July I took a day trip, first over to Council, Idaho then I headed up North to Riggins, Idaho. From McCall, Idaho I went to New meadows, Idaho and turned South on US 95 to Council. It is a very small town that, it is said, is named because it was a gathering place where the area Indian Tribes used to hold their Councils. Today I saw a small town with it's main street (US 95) all tore up. Sorry to say I didn't see much else but a lot of farm land.

I then headed North along US 95, passing back through New Meadows to Riggins. I was very impressed with this little town. It sets along the west bank of the Salmon River. It is nestled in a gorge that is very beautiful. One neat feature of Riggins is that since it is situated along the west bank of the Salmon River and it is not a very wide town. It strings out along the river and does not spread far to the west (gorge wall) nor east (Salmon River). Kind of neat actually.

Tommorow I plan to drive up to Brundige Mountain Ski Resort to see what they do for the summer. I will detail more about this on my next update.

I will be departing McCall Friday the 19th for Cascade. I will provide another update soon after I arrive.

Anyway, I will use this period to make preperations for my continued travels south.

19 August 2005 Moved to Cascade, Idaho

Departed McCall, Idaho today and arrived in Cascade, Idaho. It is only about 30 miles down the road. But I am now heading south. After my one month stay in Cascade I will then head down to the Boise area. I'm thinking I will spend one month in Emmett, Idaho. Emmett is where I lived for the first 5 years after I retired from the Navy in 1994. I have family and friends still living there and my favorite Coffee shop the Mocha Bay. I was there so much that I got a nick name, "Mocha Bay Ray."

3 Sept 2005 First Update Cascade, Idaho

What a beautiful place. I am staying at the Waters Edge RV Resort. My rig is about 90 feet from the Payette River. I have been spending a lot of my time down on the river bank just enjoying the sights and doing a lot of thinking.

I had a slow period toward the end of August (I guess that is why they call it the Dog Days of August) with only some occassional work coming in. After the last rush of work I had I was glad for the break. Well that hasn't lasted long. September has come in with a roar. I now have more work scheduled to do than I have ever had since starting this business. The world has discovered the Traveling Webmaster. It's great! I love keeping busy and that is what I am getting.

I mentioned doing a lot of thinking along the Payette River bank. Well, I just learned that my best friend Wally's wife (name later after everyone she knows is aware of this) has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has only a short time left. Well I need to be there for him and her. So instead of my plan to go south to Phoenix then on to New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming and back to Idaho. I will just head south straight to Phoenix and stay there for the winter.

Flexibility is the key to this adventure.

I have about two weeks left here in Cascade. I will enjoy the peace and quiet here and my time setting on the banks of the Payette River. Then I will head down to Emmett, Idaho. I plan to stay in Emmett, while I get all my final preperations taken care of before I head to Phoenix.

One of my oldest friends and Navy Shipmate, LCDR Rafael George Rey, USN(Ret) lives in Gretna Louisiana which is in New Orleans proper. We first met back in the early 70's when we were stationed togather at the Negishi Heights Microwave and Tandem Switching Center. We have managed to stay in contact with each other for over 30 years. I hope and pray that he and his wife Adless are safe and well after Huricane Katrina. If anyone reading this knows of George or Adless and how they are doing I would appreciate hearing from you.
