Ray Plumlee's an American Odyssey
Traveling Webmaster's Deck Log
This is a copy of my old Deck Log (Online Journal). I am now using an online blog at my "Have Web Sites Will Travel" web site. I use it to chronolog my travels around North America (my American Odyssey).
This "Old" Deck Log is now only an archive of past postings. It tell's the reader where I have visited and what adventures I have had up til the time I started my blog on Have Web Sites Will Travel. This archive was written primarily from the perspective of a tourist. Not necessarily my work log though I may do some of that too, especially in those early days when I built the sites resouces. Initially I used it to detail my efforts in getting prepared for the adventure. Then I chronicled the adventure itself.

19 June 2005 Made my move to McCall, Idaho
Left Boise early morning (9:00AM) enroute to McCall. Stopped at the Longbranch Restaurant & Saloon for breakfast in Horseshoe Bend. Then headed north on Highway 55 up to McCall. The Payette River was full with plenty of white water. The drive was absolutely beautiful. Green and lush. The temperature was in the high 50's and low 60's. In other words it was a perfect day.
I will be here at least a month. I plan to take some day trips around from here and see where else I want to stay. More on my next locations later.
4 July 2005 Settling in to a routine in McCall, Idaho
Boy what a beautiful place! I am in a new RV Park called the McCall RV Resort. It is only partially completed but it is already a very nice park. The spaces are all spacious (for an RV Park with a grass lawn on both sides. Most sites are pull throughs but they do have some backend sites. There is a "Lodge" with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub and a steam sauna. They have an old chuck wagon out front that they use (I am told) for gatherings. They also have a very nice patio area for barbecues and other gatherings.
My site is on the Northern edge of the park and just 30 feet from the back of my RV, which is where my big windows are and I have my desk which is where I do all my work. Anyway, one day last week, while on the phone with a client, there were three deer grazing at the edge of the coral type wooden fence that borders the RV Park. I wish I hadn't been on the phone with a client or I would of thought about taking a picture.
No matter where I travel to and stay I typically adhere to a basic daily routine. My Internet business clients, for the most part, have day jobs and once they get home from work each day concentrate on their online businesses. Which means I am more likely to get a call at 9:00 PM than I am at 9:00 AM. In fact the odds are like 10 times more likely. So I have structured my working hours to be from about Noon to 9:00 PM. Now that doesn't mean I work 9 hours a day. If I have something that needs done I do. But what I really mean is I prepare myself, more so, during those hours to receive business calls.
So my daily routine is shaped by that business availability. So if I need to go shopping or go out for breakfast or to the Lodge to use the treadmill, swimming pool, hot tub or Steam Sauna, I tend to use the time before noon. And just to show you how providence is shining on me they just opened McCall's newest Cyber Cafe Saturday 2 July. It is called the "Mountain West Connection". It is a very plush and spacious cafe. The inside is all done in cherry wood (at least it looks like it) and forest green. They have 5 wall mounted HD TV's and very plush furniture. I went to their grand opening on Saturday and found out that their first shipment of computers just arrived Friday night and they were not setup yet. That's alright the overall ambiance lends to a great coffe shop. I know I have been including coffee from coffee shops in my daily routine for years.
So I guess you can imagine I am falling into my normal routine with ease. One day it is breakfast out and a run to the grocery store and the next it is on the treadmill and steam sauna, then the next day it is breakfast at home then the cafe/coffee shop for some reading and coffee. Depending on what my projects for the day are I might go for a scenic drive. I so enjoy just surrounding myself with all the natural beauty of the area.
Today is the 4th of July and while everyone else is getting away for the weekend I am already there. Client calls and emails are near zero so I am taking some time to catch up with my personal web sites and also enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Man what a life!
10 July 2005 Busy week working. Just a few comments.
This week I had the convergance of the notorius "Bermuda Triangle." I tend to have several programming projects going at once so that I don't get bored with the same code all the time. Well this week two of them came to a conclusion at the same time, which I normally try to avoid. Completing a project adds a little complexity to the project because I need to transfer the completed project over to the client. They tend to need a little hand holding until they are up to speed. These two projects coming to a close plus several other ones in progress made for an especially busy week.
I was looking forward to taking Sunday (today) off and going on a day trip to Council, Idaho. But yesterday and today have been so cool, I have had to run the furnace both days! July 9th and 10th! Something weird going on here. All this global warming stuff is getting a bit hard to believe, at least where I have been the last couple of years.
Since it was so cool today and overcast with showers, I decided not to go for a day trip. I will try and get away for a few hours during the week and go visit Council, Idaho and area. Of course every direction you travel from McCall is beautiful. That is why I would prefer day tripping it when the weather is a bit brighter and nice.
I have a Dr. appointment in Boise on Monday the 18th so I am making arrangements to go down to Boise on Saturday and stay a couple of days with my son Ray, my granddaughter Ellery, and daughter-in-law Jennifer. As always I will enjoy the drive there and back.
