Ray Plumlee's an American Odyssey

Traveling Webmaster's Deck Log

This is a copy of my old Deck Log (Online Journal). I am now using an online blog at my "Have Web Sites Will Travel" web site. I use it to chronolog my travels around North America (my American Odyssey).

This "Old" Deck Log is now only an archive of past postings. It tell's the reader where I have visited and what adventures I have had up til the time I started my blog on Have Web Sites Will Travel. This archive was written primarily from the perspective of a tourist. Not necessarily my work log though I may do some of that too, especially in those early days when I built the sites resouces. Initially I used it to detail my efforts in getting prepared for the adventure. Then I chronicled the adventure itself.

19 May 2004 (200 Days Since The Adventure Began!)  Milestone Alert!!!
Another milestone has been reached. 200 mission days since 1 November 2003 when I first embarked on this glorious trek.

20 May 2004 (Dinuba High School Grad Night at Disneyland)

I thought I was going to miss out on going to Disneyland on this trip to California. I guess I must have been destined to go there. My cousin Terrie (Fox) Hylton who teaches Drama at Dinuba High School asked me to go with her as one of the escorts with the Senior class. Now that the trip is over I must say for history, that the 2004 Graduating Class of Dinuba High School in Dinuba, California were the best behaved bunch of kids I have seen in a long time. The Grad Night went extremely well and added to my enjoyment of the trip.

Grad Night is a Disneyland event (this year they have 8 Grad Nights) that they put on each year. They first close the Park down to regular business then reopen the Park at 11:00 PM until 6:00 AM for the many schools Seniors. When I was a kid we used to call the senior getaway the "senior sneak." Since I graduated from Imbler High School (near La Grande, Oregon) where there were 202 kids in the entire school, K thru 12th grade. In my senior class there were 12 of us. Since we were too far from Disneyland for anything as nice as that (if they even had a Grad Night in 1965), we went to the Movie Theater in Elgin, Oregon and had a midnight showing of "Robinson Crueso On Mars" which despite the corney title is a very good Science Fiction Flick.

Below are some Photographs/Pictures I took at Disneyland. Please note that these were mostly taken at night so some pictures may be a little dark.

This was a sad site for me. When I was a kid Tommorowland was a wonderous place. With the Submarine Voyage, The Carousel of Progress, Cars of The Future in Autopia, the TWA Rocket to the Moon and the Skyway. The new Tommorowland is a mere shadow of it's old self. The Submarine Voyage, The Carousel of Progress, Cars of The Future in Autopia, the TWA Rocket to the Moon are all gone now. All that remains is a large food court and a Radio Station where the Disney Radio Station broadcasts from and this scaled down rocked that sets atop a fast food store and Star Tours. What a disappointment.

One of the few newer attractions in Tommorowland is Star Tours which is a ride simulator based on the Star Wars movies. It was OK but did not compare to the Sart Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton or the Search for Atlantis in Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas.

About 2:00 AM they started with the Disneyland Fireworks. And as you can see they put on a great show.

This is what Disneyland looks like at 6:00 AM in the morning. Which I am sure is not a site most people get to see.

I don't know where this young grad went to school, but she sure was getting into the Disneyland spirit.

8 June 2004 Where I Stayed in Kingsburg: Valkommen Village

While I spent my two months in Kingsburg, California (Fresno Area) I stayed at the Valkommen Village, a Mobile Home Park for 55's and older. I enjoyed my stay here more than any place I stayed. The main reason was the park management (pictures below) and the wonderful little park that my RV Trailer was parked right next to.

This is the entrance to Valkommen Village.

This is where I spent about 3 hours a day, almost every day I was at the Valkommen Village Mobile Home Park. It was cool in the morning and with the park all around me I enjoyed myself very much while I read books, newspapers and listened to the radio. I listened to a local talk radio show host named Ray Appleton on station KMJ 580 when I wasn't listening to the national shows. I enoyed his show very much and will miss his show now that I have moved on.

Here are the Park manager's. Left to right are Anita, Rebecca, Larry and Larry or as I sometime called them Frick and Frack. As you can see they were very mobile and were all over the place in their little getty-up mobiles. Wonderful people! Rebecca do you remember the laundry job you did for me? (Private joke)

8 June 2004 Underway for Oregon
Spent the last couple of weeks consolidating work and maintenance on the trailer and truck. New tires for the trailer and new front tires for the truck.

Got underway today for my last California leg before entering Oregon.

My first stop was Modesto where my cousin Winnie Fern and her Husband Ron Fern live. Every time I come to California I stop by to see what the Fern's are up to.

Ron and Winnie Fern on their door step with their new dog.

After that I headed on to Redding and Mount Shasta. Then on into Oregon. I planned to stay in the Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass area for a week or two then on toward Coos Bay. (Read later entries to see how plans can change.
